How to Create a Dynamic QR Code: Step-by-Step Guide

How to create a dynamic QR code step by step: choose the destination, design it to scan, test it, then print. Change the link later without reprinting.

What This Guide Helps You Do

This guide shows first-time users how to launch a dynamic QR code correctly, without rework.

You will learn:

  1. What to prepare before creation.
  2. How to build a scan-friendly design.
  3. How to test before print.
  4. How to verify analytics after launch.

When to Use This

Use this workflow when you need:

  1. A code you can edit after printing.
  2. Scan analytics for performance tracking.
  3. A deployment process that avoids expensive reprints.

Step 1: Plan the Destination Before You Generate

Go to Generator (/generate) and decide the destination type (URL, vCard, PDF, etc.).

Before saving, confirm:

  1. Destination page is mobile-friendly.
  2. Link is final enough for launch.
  3. Tracking parameters are added if you run campaigns.

Example tracking pattern: ?utm_source=qr&utm_medium=print&utm_campaign=winter_promo

Step 2: Create a Dynamic Code (Not Static)

Select dynamic behavior so you can update the destination later without replacing printed media.

Dynamic benefits:

  1. Editable destination after print.
  2. Scan analytics in dashboard.
  3. Better operational control during campaigns.

In QR Code Pro:

  1. Open the QR code generator and keep Dynamic selected (it is the default).
  2. Choose the type of content. For a web page, choose Website.
  3. Give the code a name you will recognise in your dashboard, then paste the destination URL.
  4. Click Customise colours, logo & frame to style it, or Save My QR Code to keep the standard design.
  5. Once saved, the code appears in your dashboard with its scan analytics. The printed pattern holds a short link (/r/...), which is why you can change the destination later without reprinting.

Step 3: Design for Real-World Scannability

Use Design Studio and apply these rules:

  1. Dark foreground on light background.
  2. Keep logo centered and not oversized.
  3. Use clear CTA text on frame (example: "Scan to View Menu").
  4. Keep quiet zone (empty space) around the code.

Step 4: Test Before Deployment

In the generator, Run Scan Test decodes your design in the browser before you save. It is a quick first check; still test with real phones:

  1. Scan with iPhone camera.
  2. Scan with Android camera/Lens.
  3. Test from normal lighting and lower lighting.
  4. Test from expected real-world distance.
  5. Verify destination load speed.

Step 5: Export and Deploy Correctly

Export format guidance:

  1. SVG or PDF for print and large format (vector, stays sharp at any size).
  2. PNG or JPEG for digital use.

Placement guidance:

  1. Avoid curved or reflective surfaces.
  2. Keep sufficient size for scan distance.
  3. Keep CTA near code for higher scan intent.

How to Verify It Is Working After Launch

Go to Dashboard / Analytics and confirm:

  1. Scans are being recorded.
  2. Device/location trends look plausible.
  3. Campaign tags align with expected traffic.

If scans are low, test visibility first before assuming the destination page is the issue.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Printing without multi-device testing.
  2. Low color contrast.
  3. Too-small code size for distance.
  4. Missing tracking parameters.
  5. Using static codes for changing campaigns.
